Walking Tips

During a recent visit to the AVA Headquarters in Universal City {Texas},
I ran across one of their News Service bulletins listing Walking Tips.
It occurred to me that our Texas Wanderers would be interested in what
the AVA had to say, so here are their suggestions:
-
Stretch before and after walking to prevent injuries.
-
Wear layered clothing. Walkers can warm up and/or cool down with
the appropriate clothes. Loose-fitting and durable, weather resistant
clothes are best.
-
Invest in a good pair of walking shoes. Have a professional
salesperson measure your arch and foot's overall length.
-
Change socks (synthetic fibers are recommended; they draw away the most
moisture) every 10 kilometers. Also, bring along an extra pair of
shoes if feasible.
-
Carry a walking stick (some walkers prefer walking poles) for balance.
-
A digital watch can help you time your walking pace and total workout
time.
-
Do not walk with headphones as they can be dangerous and prevent you
from hearing traffic and other noises.
-
Carry a fanny pack with identification and "pocket change" along with
a few first aid essentials: Band-Aids, blister kit, anti-itch cream, tissue,
etc.
-
Sun protection is essential. Weal sunglasses, hat and sunscreen.
-
At dusk, dawn and/or night, wear light-colored or reflectorized clothing
for visibility.
-
Try to walk with a companion or in a group for safety reasons.
If you walk alone, tell someone where you are walking and when you expect
to return.
-
Remember to be environmentally aware. Do not litter tissue, candy
wrappers, or other assorted items along a trail.
Perhaps you have other walking tips you would like to share. If
so, let us know and we will pass them along.
