Trail
Information:
14 AF HqsThe primary route (AVA rating 1) wanders through base housing, along an urban reforestation area, and though the "Community Loop" containing the Base Exchange.  It includes a Korean War era tank, a Minuteman III ICBM, and the Headquarters of the 14th Air Force (Flying Tigers) & 30th Space Wing (host unit for the base).  Participants will finish by walking down the Boulevard of Flags.

There is also alternate route (AVA rating 1+) outside of the main area of the Base.  This will allow our non-military friends to complete the event regardless of the Base's security posture.  Participants will drive from the Start/Finish point a couple of miles, and then walk along lightly traveled rural roads.

Directions: From the South:  Take US-101 to the Vandenberg AFB/CA-1 exit shortly after the Gaviota Tunnel.  Go west (left) toward Lompoc.  When the road dead-ends at Ocean Avenue just north of town, turn left (west) into Lompoc.  Follow CA-1 as it passes through Lompoc (turning right on "H" Street & then left at the stoplight after leaving town) to the Vandenberg AFB main gate.  Turn left into the Base.  The S/F is on the right before you come to the guard shack.

From the North:  Take US-101 to the Betteravia Road exit on the south side of Santa Maria.  Go west (right) to the fifth stop light, Broadway (CA-135).  Go left (south) out of town.  The road merges with CA-1.  A few miles later, follow the signs to the right when the two highways separate.  After going straight through the light at the VAFB entrance, turn into the Visitor Center on the right.

Awards: For 2005, the CCPP is offering the same patch at all of our events.  It features our mascot Pooter, the peregrine falcon, stepping out with a walking stick.  In the background is the patio on the Santa Maria city hall.  Both the patio and the nearby courthouse where Michael Jackson has been standing trial are parts of the Santa Maria YRE route.  Santa Barbara county is highlighted in red since Santa Maria is in Santa Barbara county.  The other six counties are listed in blue.

The location boxes are optional.  You can earn an "uncut" patch by walking for IVV credit at at total of five of our locations in at least two different counties.  To see the application for the "uncut" version of the patch, click here

The Pooter Patches from 2001 (showing Pooter along the Solvang YRE route),  2002 (showing Pooter walking in La Purisima Mission State Historical Park, site of our March 2002 event), 2003 (showing Pooter walking by the Minuteman III ICBM along the VAFB YRE route), and 2004 (showing Pooter walking by a map of California with "our" counties highlighted) are available as "B" awards; however, the city tabs are no longer available.  To see a complete list of your "B" award choices, click here.

Fees: Ask for the "volksmarch book" at the desk.  Every participant must register, sign the liability waiver, carry a start card, and turn the start card in at the end of the event.  Fees are:

Host City
Information:
30 SW LogoVandenberg AFB, CA, covers nearly 100,000 acres of sandy beaches, rocky cliffs, streams, woodlands, and industrial areas.  It boasts 42 miles of coastline, 771 miles of roads, 1,969 houses and 1,843 other buildings.  It contains over 1,000 recorded archeological and historic sites, and is home to 13 federally listed endangered, threatened, and proposed species (meaning they will likely be listed within one year) of animals and plants.  Its paved runway is 15,000 feet long.  According to a study by the UC Santa Barbara Economic Forecast Project, in 2000 the base employed 11,404 people (33.5% military; 12.4% DOD civilian; 54.1% contractor).

Vandenberg Air Force Base is responsible for all Department of Defense space and missile launch activities on the West Coast. All U.S. satellites destined for near polar orbit are launched from Vandenberg.  Units on VAFB support R&D tests and launch range operations for DOD, USAF, and NASA space, ballistic missile, and aeronautical systems and commercial space launches.  Vandenberg is the only Air Force base that provides flight test support for Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles systems.  The base is host to facilities and essential services for more than 36 aerospace contractors. The host unit is the 30th Space Wing, which is part of Air Force Space Command.  The base was originally Army's Camp Cooke, which was activated October 1941.  It was taken over by USAF June 5, 1957 and was renamed for Gen. Hoyt S. Vandenberg, USAF's second Chief of Staff.
