March 22 & 23, 2003
5 or 10 Km Volksmarch
El Capitan State Beach, Santa Barbara County, CA
Sponsors Central Coast Peregrine Pathfinders (AVA 876/CA 59)
Sanction Nr. PA03/015
Start/Finish
Location
El Capitan State Beach
Santa Barbara County, CA.
Hours The Start/Finish Point will be open on both Saturday & Sunday from 8:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon.  All participants must be off the trails not later than 3:00 p.m.
Routes The primary route includes a 2.5 mile bike path that connects El Capitan State Beach to Refugio State Beach, about 2.5 miles to the west.  The paved route, with beautiful views of the Pacific Ocean, has been recently repaired due to erosion.  There are fences along some stretches, but others do not have a guardrail.  Local bicycle riders who also enjoy the beautiful view also use the route.  There are also some interpretive signs pointing out the view.
*  A shorter route (approximately half the distance of the primary one) will be available for those who prefer a shorter distance.
*  Several inclines cause both routes to be rated as a 2.  They may be OK for strollers but will be difficult for wheelchairs.  There is no water along the bike path, so walkers are encouraged to carry their own if it is a sunny day.
Award For 2003, the CCPP is offering the same patch at all of our events.  It features our mascot Pooter, the peregrine falcon, stepping out with a walking stick.  In the background is a static display of a Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missile that is part of the "on-base" route of the Vandenberg AFB YRE.  The Vandenberg name is red to highlight Pooter's presence there. Note that it includes a tab for this event.

The location boxes are optional.  You can earn an "uncut" patch by walking for IVV credit at any five of our locations: Buellton (YRE walk and bike), Carpinteria (YRE walk), El Capital State Beach (March 2003 weekend event), Lompoc (YRE walk), Los Osos (YRE walk), Pismo Beach (YRE walk) Santa Barbara (YRE walk), Santa Maria (YRE walk), Solvang (YRE walk), and Vandenberg AFB (YRE walk or Global XXIII).  For information about the "uncut" version of the patch, ask for special instructions.

The Pooter Patches from 2001 (showing Pooter along the Solvang YRE route) and 2002 (showing Pooter walking in La Purisima Mission State Historical Park, site of our March 2003 event) are available as "B" awards; however, the city tabs are no longer available.  To see a complete list of your "B" award choices, click here.

Directions

*   From the South:  Take US-101 to past Santa Barbara for about 17 miles.  Exit at the signs for El Capitan State Beach (exit #117) and follow them.
*   From the North:  Take US-101 12.5 miles past the Gaviota rest areas.  Exit at the signs for El Capitan State Beach (exit #117) and follow them.
*   All Travelers:  Since we planned this event, the fee for entering the park grounds has jumped from $2.00 to $4.00.  However, the park has agreed to admit volksmarchers at the $2.00 rate, so be sure to tell the ranger at the entrance that your are a "volksmarcher."  We hope you consider the fee a modest donation to help preserve our state’s beaches.

     *   "A" patch & IVV Credit $7.00
