Trail
Information:
Trail is rated by the AVA as a "1".  This means it is on paved, flat surfaces.  A new trail for 2002, which begins a short drive from the hotel, goes out and back on rural Bull Canyon Road.  For those who like a walk in town, the previous route is available as an option. It meanders by the Civic Center, the Santa Maria Valley Railway Historical Museum, the Natural History Museum, the Lawn Bowling Club, and Allan Hancock College's main campus.  However, almost all of it is through Santa Maria's quiet residential neighborhoods.  It passes historic/quaint homes (like those on Palm Court) and newer residences.  Water and restrooms are available at the start/finish, and along the trail.  Only a couple of restaurants are located along the route.
College Campus Event Yes.  This walk visits the campus of Allan Hancock College.
Awards: For 2005, the CCPP is offering the same patch at all of our events.  It features our mascot Pooter, the peregrine falcon, stepping out with a walking stick.  In the background is the patio on the Santa Maria city hall.  Both the patio and the nearby courthouse where Michael Jackson has been standing trial are parts of the Santa Maria YRE route.  Santa Barbara county is highlighted in red since Santa Maria is in Santa Barbara county.  The other six counties are listed in blue.

The location boxes are optional.  You can earn an "uncut" patch by walking for IVV credit at at total of five of our locations in at least two different counties.  To see the application for the "uncut" version of the patch, click here

The Pooter Patches from 2001 (showing Pooter along the Solvang YRE route),  2002 (showing Pooter walking in La Purisima Mission State Historical Park, site of our March 2002 event), 2003 (showing Pooter walking by the Minuteman III ICBM along the VAFB YRE route), and 2004 (showing Pooter walking by a map of California with "our" counties highlighted) are available as "B" awards; however, the city tabs are no longer available.  To see a complete list of your "B" award choices, click here.

IVV Credit: You are eligible for IVV Individual Achievement Awards program event credit only once during each half year (January - June and July - December).  Of course, you earn distance credit every time you complete the course.
Geocaching Geocaching is a new sport where participants participate in the "Global GPS Cache Hunt."  The CCPP is in the process of establishing "virtual caches" on all our YRE routes.  For information on the sport in general, click here.  To see the page for the virtual geocache for this event, established by club secretary Adam Borin of Santa Maria, go to:

Host City
Information:
All American City AwardSanta Maria, located on US-101 in northern Santa Barbara County, CA.  It is located 168 miles north of Los Angeles and 266 miles south of San Francisco.  Closer to home, Santa Maria is 75 miles north of Santa Barbara and 34 miles south of San Luis Obispo.  Santa Maria was selected in 1998 as an All-America City.

Santa Maria has maintained steady growth, and the population of 3,500 in 1909 has expanded to 53,000 within the city limits.  Just outside the Santa Maria boundaries, the Orcutt area has grown to a population of 30,000.  Settlers created a productive area from the desert, planting more than 40,000 eucalyptus trees to break the forces of wind and lessen its dryingSanta Barbara County Mapeffect on surface soil. The area's mild climate results from solving the wind problems of the 1870s. Irrigation was introduced in 1897, establishing the valley's destiny. People can enjoy Santa Maria's three 18 hole courses, lighted tennis courts, a tennis club, clamming, deep sea fishing, and boating on nearby lakes year-round. The land-forms west of Santa Maria attract sand dune riders statewide.  Santa Maria is also home to a two-level shopping mall with department stores flanking each end and 80 shops and restaurants between them.

The early settlers barbecued at day's end. The technique required top sirloin of beef chunks about three inches thick, generously seasoned with salt, pepper, and garlic salt, strung on skewers and cooked over oak coals. Today's Santa Maria style barbecue maintains the technique.  More than 50 wineries are in production between Paso Robles and Santa Barbara.
