Hours:

The hotel front desk is open 24/7. However, you can only walk between dawn and dusk.

Trail
Information:

Although there is only one stamp, this event offers you a choice of two routes. They are on generally flat, paved surfaces and are carry AVA ratings of "1." (Both, by the way, drew over 130 walkers and rave reviews during the 2001 California Volkssport Association Convention which the CCPP sponsored here.)

Pismo Beach Pier & Downtown. The primary walk for this events heads south from the hotel into downtown Pismo Beach. It includes Pismo Beach, the Pier, the boardwalk, and a monarch butterlfy grove just south of town (best viewing November - March).

Shell Beach Palisades. The alternate route wanders north through the Shell Beach area of Pismo Beach, with views of the Pacific Ocean, the Pismo Beach Pier, the Pismo State Beach, and the Nipomo Dunes in the distance.

Directions:

All travelers: Take US-101 to Pismo Beach in southern San Luis Obispo County, CA.

From the south:
*   Pass the Price Street exit and take the Shell Beach Road exit.
*   Turn left under the highway.
*   Turn left again onto Shell Beach Road.
*   With the Pacific Ocean to your right, double back until you reach the hotel, which will be on your right.

From the north:
* Take the Price Street exit.
* Go through town, continuing until you get to the hotel, which will be on your left.

Awards:

For 2005, the CCPP is offering the same patch at all of our events. It features our mascot Pooter, the peregrine falcon, stepping out with a walking stick. In the background is the patio on the Santa Maria city hall. Both the patio and the nearby courthouse where Michael Jackson has been standing trial are parts of the Santa Maria YRE route. Santa Barbara county is highlighted in red since Santa Maria is in Santa Barbara county. The other six counties are listed in blue.

The location boxes are optional. You can earn an "uncut" patch by walking for IVV credit at at total of five of our locations in at least two different counties. To see the application for the "uncut" version of the patch, click here.

The Pooter Patches from 2001 (showing Pooter along the Solvang YRE route), 2002 (showing Pooter walking in La Purisima Mission State Historical Park, site of our March 2002 event), 2003 (showing Pooter walking by the Minuteman III ICBM along the VAFB YRE route), and 2004 (showing Pooter walking by a map of California with "our" counties highlighted) are available as "B" awards; however, the city tabs are no longer available. Fees:

Ask for the "volksmarch book" at the desk. Every participant must register, sign the liability waiver, carry a start card, and turn the start card in at the end of the event. Fees are:
     *   "A" patch & IVV Credit $7.00
     *   "B" award & IVV Credit $4.00
     *   Location Tab Additional $1.00
     *   IVV/AVA Credit Only $3.00
     *   Participation Only Free
Note: Awards are not kept at the start/finish. They will be mailed to you at no additional cost.

IVV Credit:

You are eligible for IVV Individual Achievement Awards program event credit only once during each half year (January - June and July - December). Of course, you earn distance credit every time you complete the course.

Geocaching

Geocaching is a new sport where participants participate in the "Global GPS Cache Hunt." The CCPP is in the process of establishing "virtual caches" on all our YRE routes. For information on the sport, click here. There are already two virtual geocaches along this route.

Miscellaneous:

Water and restrooms are available at the start/finish, and at a couple of public parks and buildings along the trail. Pets are welcome, but should be kept on a leash. Please clean up after them. Children under 12 are welcome but must be accompanied by an adult. Every reasonable effort has been taken to make this event safe and enjoyable for everyone. However, the Central Coast Peregrine Pathfinders cannot be held responsible for any lost of stolen articles, accidents, or injury of any kind.

Information:

The History of people at Pismo Beach starts at least 9,000 years ago with the Chumash Indians, who referred to the area as a place to find pismu, or tar, to seal their canoes to make them ocean worthy. Others say the Pismo clam gave its name to Pismo Beach. The clams were once plentiful, but due to harvesting by humans and sea otters, the supply has been reduced and clam digging is rationed. The City is part of the original 8,838 acre Rancho Pismo. Rancho Pismo was granted to Jose Ortega by Manuel Rinemo Goriod on November 18, 1840. Ortega is thought to have built a small adobe which later became part of the Price Adobe. Back in 1881, Pismo's original wharf opened for business. Taking off from a point below the present Main Street, remnants of the pilings may still be seen at very low tides. The town of Pismo Beach was established in 1891 in anticipation of the Southern Pacific Railroad and tourists. Its founder, John Price, was correct, and today Pismo Beach has a thriving tourist industry.
