Description: |
The basic 10 km (6.2 mile) trail wanders through the Lompoc civic center,
downtown murals, residential areas and by flower fields. It is flat
and on pavement, earning it an AVA
rating of "1." It is suitable for strollers, though wheelchairs
will have difficulty at some intersections. Pets must be leashed.
Public restrooms are available along the route at both Ryon and Beattie
Parks.
Because the extra 3 km option is up a steep dirt trail, it earns an AVA rating of "2+." However, hikers who chose it are rewarded with a beautiful panorama of the valley at the turnaround. |

| Awards: |
For
2005, the CCPP is offering the same patch at all of our events. It
features our mascot Pooter, the peregrine falcon, stepping out with a walking
stick. In the background is the patio on the Santa Maria city hall.
Both the patio and the nearby courthouse where Michael Jackson has been standing
trial are parts of the Santa Maria YRE route. Santa Barbara county is
highlighted in red since Santa Maria is in Santa Barbara county. The other
six counties are listed in blue. The location boxes are optional. You can earn an "uncut" patch by walking for IVV credit at at total of five of our locations in at least two different counties. To see the application for the "uncut" version of the patch, click here. The Pooter Patches from 2001 (showing Pooter along the Solvang YRE route), 2002 (showing Pooter walking in La Purisima Mission State Historical Park, site of our March 2002 event), 2003 (showing Pooter walking by the Minuteman III ICBM along the VAFB YRE route), and 2004 (showing Pooter walking by a map of California with "our" counties highlighted) are available as "B" awards; however, the city tabs are no longer available. City Information: |
The completion of the coastal railroad between San Francisco and Los Angeles in 1901, and the subsequent extension of a spur into Lompoc (pronounced LOM-poke), provided the impetus for growth in the Valley. Fields were cleared and leveled for agricultural production of specialized crops including flower seeds. The flower seed industry so dominated agricultural production that the area was dubbed the "Valley of Flowers." The Johns-Mannville Corporation and others began the mining of diatomaceous earth in the southern hills. The mining industry continues to be major employer. In 1941, Camp Cooke was established as an Army training base. Later turned over to the USAF, it was renamed Vandenberg Air Force Base in 1958. The Base was the first missile base of the United States Air Force. The Space Shuttle program was slated to begin launches in the late 1980's. However, the when the Challenger exploded during take-off in 1986, the West Coast Shuttle Program was terminated, leaving Lompoc in a severe recession. The Lompoc Valley responded to the Shuttle disaster by focusing on tourism as a means of fighting its way through the recession. By focusing on the natural beauty of the Valley, its flower industry, the pristine Central Coast, and by developing a successful downtown mural program, the City of Lompoc has built an excellent tourism industry that is to this day a primary component of the Lompoc economy. Today, the City of Lompoc is dubbed The City of Murals in the Valley of Flowers. You can find out more about Lompoc by visiting |
