For
2005, the CCPP is offering the same patch at all of our events. It
features our mascot Pooter, the peregrine falcon, stepping out with a walking
stick. In the background is the patio on the Santa Maria city hall.
Both the patio and the nearby courthouse where Michael Jackson has been standing
trial are parts of the Santa Maria YRE route. Santa Barbara county is
highlighted in red since Santa Maria is in Santa Barbara county. The other
six counties are listed in blue. The location boxes are optional. You can earn an "uncut" patch by walking for IVV credit at at total of five of our locations in at least two different counties. To see the application for the "uncut" version of the patch, click here. The Pooter Patches from 2001 (showing Pooter along the Solvang YRE route), 2002 (showing Pooter walking in La Purisima Mission State Historical Park, site of our March 2002 event), 2003 (showing Pooter walking by the Minuteman III ICBM along the VAFB YRE route), and 2004 (showing Pooter walking by a map of California with "our" counties highlighted) are available as "B" awards; however, the city tabs are no longer available. To see a complete list of your "B" award choices, click here. |
| California Golden Heritage Program | Yes - Southern California. Two state historical plaques commemorate the nearby Chumash Indian village of "Mishopshnow," discovered by Juan Rodriquez Cabrillo, August 14, 1541. Spanish soldiers, observing the Indians building wooden canoes, called the village "La Carpinteria" -- the carpenter shop. The route passes one marker and goes within half a block of the other. |

| Host City
Information: |
Carpinteria
sits on the Pacific Ocean in Santa Barbara County, about 12 miles (20 kilometers)
south of Santa Barbara on U.S. 101. The Spanish named the area Carpinteria
because the Chumash tribe, which lived in the area, had a large seagoing
canoe-building enterprise, or "carpentry shop there. The tribe had
chosen the location because of naturally- occurring surface tar which
was used to seal the boats. Seals and sea lions can be see the area December
through May, as well as an occasional gray whale. Tide pools contain starfish,
sea anemones, crabs, snails, octopi and sea urchins. Carpinteria
is home to a world-renowned surfing area at Rincon Point, and a beautiful
swimming beach. Over 800,000 visitors come annually to swim, picnic, fish
and hike at Carpinteria State Beach Park. Encompassing wooded groves and
4,000 feet of ocean frontage, the park offers overnight camping and the
best surf-fishing and tide-pooling for miles around. Dozens of antique
stores, small shops and restaurants are clustered along the main streets
of Carpinteria, making the Area a browser's paradise.
