The trail is rated 1B by the AVA because parts of it are on dirt and gravel trails rather than pavement, and there is one gentle hill. The walk goes through Shamel County Park, Moonstone Beach Parklands, East West Ranch, and residential areas of Cambria. All along the route are rustic benches for resting and enjoying the view as well as picnic tables in both Shamel County Park and Leffingwell landing. Information

At the foot of the scenic Highway One/Big Sur coast, halfway between Los Angeles and San Francisco, is the quaint seaside village of Cambria. An artist's colony nestled in a forest of towering Monterey pines, Cambria offers visitors sophisticated restaurants, art galleries, antique and specialty shops and scores of nearby wineries. Just six miles south of world renowned Hearst Castle, this picturesque village has a variety of hotels, motels, B&B's, inns and vacation home rentals. A leisurely pace and country village atmosphere are the town's main attractions, particularly for urban residents seeking a quiet, romantic getaway.

The 417 acre oceanfront East West Ranch is located in the community of Cambria. The ranch formerly named the Fiscalini Ranch was once part of the historic Rancho Santa Rosa land grant and owned by the Fiscalini family from the mid 1800's until 1979. The present owners purchased it in 1993 and renamed it East West Ranch due to its geography straddling Scenic Highway One with the Pacific Ocean in the west and the Santa Rosa creek basin on the east. Found within the ranch borders are a variety of natural plant communities and wild life habitats. Old maps show the Monterey pine forest once covered the entire ranch. There are now five remaining stands with the largest covering 65 acres. There are stands of coastal live oak, coastal scrub, sea bluff scrub, and grasslands along with small wetlands and marshes. The wildlife community includes numerous land and sea birds, deer, bobcats, squirrels, skunks, raccoons red legged frogs. The Ranch has a mile of ocean bluff trail where one may view otters, whales, seals and sea lions.
